Meiji era Japanese large red lacquerware box maki-e gilded with cranes / storks
Striking early 20th century Japanese large lacquerware box. Square body with slightly fluted sides is lacquered in rich red and hand-painted with a sumptuously gilded scene of cranes in a traditional motif, using gold maki-e蒔絵 (relief lacquer design). Five storks are sitting in on a flowering tree branch while two are flying off into the distant sun. The sides of the box are further decorated with large blossoming flowers.
Made in Japan, c. 1910’s (Meiji period).

Good antique condition. Some nibbles along edges, nicks and general scuffing appropriate to age and use; the lacquer is raised in few places, most prominently on the lid.
