George II silver gilt berry spoon with Green Man mask
George II large sterling silver dessert berry spoon decorated with intricate engraving and repoussage. The gold-washed bowl is trimmed with a frilled edge and embossed with a fruit design of pineapple, pear and orange. The handle is engraved all over with an ornate scrolling design and the top is decorated with the Green Man mask - an architectural motif that originated in late Roman art from leaf masks used to represent gods and mythological figures.
Made by Ebenezer Coker and fully hallmarked for London, 1750.
