Early Victorian rosewood sarcophagus jewellery case with mother-of-pearl inlay
Early Victorian sarcophagus-shaped tea caddy that has been converted into a lady's work box / jewellery casket. Beautiful rosewood veneer is inlaid with ornate scrolling and floral marquetry in shimmering mother-of-pearl. The asymmetric body is raised on squat bun feet and has a domed hinged lid and turned handles with loops. The interior of the lid has a drop-down letter compartment that is lined with dark pink silk at the front and decorated with crossed frilled ribbons.
The wood has lovely grain and a rich, warm patina.
Wonderfully decorative piece with good storage space.
