Antique sterling silver seashell butter dish with Art Nouveau mother-of-pearl knife
Wonderful butter set comprising a sterling silver large seashell dish and mother-of-pearl handled knife. The shell is raised on 3 ball feet and can be also used to serve caviar. The knife has a beautiful wrythen reeded handle and the blade is ornately bright-cut with an Art Nouveau design of flowers and wriggle work borders; the back of the blade is decorated with an applied acanthus leaf. The mother-of-pearl has beautiful deep lustre and rich colouring.

The knife is made by Hilliard & Thomason and hallmarked for Birmingham, 1871. The butter dish is made by Harrison Brothers & Howson (George Howson) and hallmarked for Sheffield, 1924.
