1880's Franz Anton Mehlem for Royal Bonn blush Aesthetic pair of vases
Franz Anton Mehlem for Royal Bonn, a pair of two porcelain two-handled bottle vases. Blush ivory necks and bases with cream baluster bodies with shot colours, gilt clouds and gold-dusted handles. The vases are beautifully hand-painted with polychrome parrots perched on tree branches among verdant foliage and butterflies on the reverse. The panels are enhanced with sumptuous gilding in high-relief.
The vase shape and decoration have a clear Japanese influence characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement period. This particular design was also heavily influenced by Royal Worcester examples of the period.
Marked to bases with impressed circular Franz Anton Mehlem Royal Bonn Y Rhein mark and painted in red "1882" (pattern number) "22" (shape number). One photo of the mark has the contrast turned up very high to see the mark better.
Made in Germany, c. 1880's.
940 g
27 cm tall
7 cm across the bases
10 cm across widest points
Good antique condition. Some crazing and scuffing to gilt appropriate to age; one vase has a chip to foot and firing defect where one handle attaches to the body.
