About this piece
Egyptian Revival design saw another wave of popularity through the mid-20th century, decades after its initial 1920's surge following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, and this candelabra shows the style still being reinterpreted well into the 1950's. The three arms are reeded, meeting at a central stem that rises from an oval base trimmed with gadrooned borders, a fairly restrained decorative treatment compared to some of the more heavily ornamented Egyptian Revival pieces produced in the style's first wave.
It sits at an interesting point in the revival's second life, when the original archaeological excitement had long since faded but the visual vocabulary itself had become established enough to keep being used on its own merits. Three-arm candelabra like this were built to hold real presence on a table or sideboard, spreading light from multiple points rather than a single flame.
