Warner Brothers of Delhi worked within the broader tradition of British Raj silverware, producing pieces for a colonial market that wanted recognisably British forms executed with Indian craftsmanship and material. This pair of compotes takes a circular bowl form on pedestal feet, each with two openwork handles, but the pierced wavy geometric decoration running around the sides pushes the design firmly into Art Deco territory rather than the denser, more traditional patterning common on earlier Colonial Indian silver. It's a nice example of two design worlds meeting somewhere in the middle rather than one simply borrowing from the other.
Both pieces carry matching hallmarks, confirming they were made and finished together rather than assembled later as a matched pair from separate stock, which is worth knowing given how often pairs get split up or mismatched over a century of handling.
