Victorian old mine cut paste silver crescent moon brooch
Wonderful Victorian solid silver brooch in the shape of a chunky crescent / curved moon. Openwork body is trimmed with a beaded border and set with 11 old-mine cut paste (Strass) stones. All the stones are original and cut by a good jeweller - they catch the light beautifully and sparkle like diamonds.
Original C-clasp closure on reverse; the silver is marked for 830 which was used in Norway, Sweden and Finland at the time the brooch was made.
Made c. 1880’s.

Paste jewellery despite being used as a low cost substitute for diamonds in 18th to 20th century is now highly sought after in its own right. It has a very long history with a form of paste dating all the way back to the Roman empire.
