Renaissance Revival Hanau pair of large figural candlesticks with Pan and cherubs

£1,625.00

A fine pair of antique German Historicist pair of large and exceptionally decorative solid silver figural chambersticks, resting on circular domed scalloped bases. Profusely chased with scrolls and set with four arches that contain musicians in 17th century attire. The architectural sconces are also embellished with arches that contain alternating figures of old women and young maids with flowers. The stem is modelled as a scrolling leaf with a naked putto cherub and the leaf-capped handle is set Pan playing the flute, and leaning against a seashell thumbpiece.

The entire body is further decorated with embossed and incised scrolls, shells, foliage and Arabesque panels.

Exquisite and highly decorative pair in Renaissance / Baroque style.

The candlesticks have been tested in a stationary XRF spectrometer as 960 silver which is just higher than 958 Britannia. The highest official standard of silver in Germany and Austria was 935, but as the prices of silver dropped significantly between 1894 and 1915, silver objects would often have higher content than the official requirements.
