Wonderful Meiji Japanese russet red boxwood box with lid. Round body that tapers towards the base is intricately carved in high-relief with the 12 animals of the zodiac. Wonderful craftsmanship with each animal having a distinct facial expression that is enhanced with their eyes being painted.

The base of the pot is signed with a two character mark.
The box is just the right size to be used as a natsume tea caddy.

Made in Japan, c. 1890’s.
