Léon Bakst was a Jewish Russian artist who revolutionized theatrical design both in scenery and in costume. He was a member of the Sergei Diaghilev circle for whom he designed exotic, richly coloured sets and costumes, and part of a group of artists who formed the Mir Iskusstva (“World of Art”) movement. His designs for the Ballets Russes, especially during its heyday (1909–14), were opulent, innovative, and extraordinary, and his influence on fashion and interior design was widespread.
