Japanese Edo blue and white porcelain charger with dragon and lotus flowers

£180.00

Charming Japanese export blue and white porcelain plate / charger in Kraak style. Painted with a dragon to centre with decorative medallions to body, interspersed with blooming lotus flowers. Marked to the base with an apocryphal Qianlong period mark in a double line round border.

"Made in 1775 (Yi-Wei year) during the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty".

太清年製 (great qing period made) 乾隆乙未 (Qianlong [year of] wooden sheep).

The arrangement of the characters, the presence of fire support marks and the dot under the “da” character indicate the Japanese origin. A single fire support indicates 1850’s to 1860’s. The vine decoration in dark cobalt blue on the cavetto and exterior also speaks in favour of this.

Made in Japan, Edo period, c. 1850’s to 1860’s.

490 g
3.5 cm tall
21.5 cm diameter

Two cracks visible from both sides; hairline cracks to the underside; numerous chips and nibbles along the edge; wear to gilt rim.
