Art Nouveau sterling silver coat buttons, cased, Ceylon Championships prize
A set of 5 antique sterling silver large coat buttons of round bodies, fashioned in an openwork scrolling Art Nouveau design. The buttons are housed in their original red leather presentation case that is lined with cream silk and dark purple velvet.
The case is marked to lid "Nuwara Eliya, 1901, 2nd prize, Ladies open singles". These buttons were given as a prize at the Ceylon Championships later known as the Sri Lankan Championships (1972–76). This was a men's and women's national tennis tournament held at the Hill Club Tennis Club, Nuwara Eliya (British Ceylon) from 1884 through 1976.
