19th century "Das Große Fass im Heidelberger” Tun cast iron souvenir plate
Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir cast iron plate depicting the Great Heidelberg Tun. The centre of the plate depicts the famous wine vat and the wide border is beautifully decorated in high-relief with fruiting grapevines.
The front of the plate is inscribed "Das Große Fass im Heidelberger".
Made in Germany, c. 1870’s.
The Heidelberg Tun (German: Großes Fass), or Great Heidelberg Tun, is an extremely large wine vat contained within the cellars of Heidelberg Castle. There have been four such barrels in the history of Heidelberg. In 1751, the year of its construction, the present one had a capacity of 221,726 litres (58,574 U.S. gallons).
