Gien's factory built its reputation through the second half of the 1800's specifically on reviving that vocabulary alongside the closely related sixteenth-century maiolica tradition from Urbino, treating faience as a legitimate vehicle for art-historical scholarship rather than simple decoration. This ewer carries both influences confidently: a generous globular body, flared neck, and sweeping loop handle, worked in Gien's rich cobalt blue, ochre, iron red, and green enamels against a warm ivory ground.

A striking cobalt-blue medallion enclosing a winged putto anchors one side of the body, framed by crisp geometric Renaissance borders running around the rim, neck, foot, and handle. The linework throughout is fine and confident, floral sprigs and elaborate strapwork cartouches filling every remaining space without the composition ever feeling crowded, the kind of dense, exuberant ornament that Gien's decorators clearly relished getting right. Dated to around 1880 to 1895, the piece sits within Gien's most celebrated Renaissance Revival decades, when the factory's reputation for combining historical precision with real painterly confidence was at its height.

Condition notes

Excellent antique condition. The glaze remains bright with strong colours and a good surface sheen. There is light age-related wear and a few minor firing and glaze characteristics typical of faience of the period, but no significant damage noted. A well-preserved and decorative example.
